چکیده

The sizes of the broad-line regions (BLRs) in γ-ray active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are estimated from their optical continuum luminosity by using the empirical relation between RBLR and Lλ,opt. Using the broad emission line data, we derive the photon energy density in the relativistic blobs near the massive black holes in AGNs. We calculate the power of the broad-line photons Compton up-scattered by the relativistic electrons in the blobs. Compared with observed γ-ray emission data, the Doppler factors δ of the blobs for a sample of 36 γ-ray AGNs are derived, which are in the range of ∼ 3 − 17. We estimate the central black hole masses of these γ-ray AGNs from the sizes of the BLR and the broad line widths. It is found that the black hole masses are in the range of ∼ 10 − 10M⊙. A significant correlation is found between the Doppler factor δ and the core dominance parameter R. The results are consistent with the external radiation Compton (ERC) models for γ-ray emission from AGNs. The soft seed photons are probably from the broad-line regions. A test on external Compton models for γ-ray active galactic nuclei

There is clear evidence that the γ-ray emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is attributed to the inverse Compton scatterings in the relativistic blobs near the massive black holes. If the soft seed photons are from the regions outside the blobs, a linear relation between (νFν,γ/νFν,synu ) and Doppler factor δ is expected, where νFν,γ and νFν,syn are monochromatic γ-ray and synchrotron fl...

Light Curve of a Source Orbiting around a Black Hole: a Fitting-formula

A simple, analytical fitting-formula for a photometric light curve of a source of light orbiting around a black hole is presented. The formula is applicable for sources on a circular orbit with radius smaller than 45 gravitational radii from the black hole. This range of radii requires gravitational focusation of light rays and the Doppler effect to be taken into account with care. The fitting-...

SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES IN GALACTIC NUCLEI Observational Evidence and Some Astrophysical Consequences

Abstract. I review the status of observational determinations of central masses in nearby galactic nuclei. Results from a variety of techniques are summarized, including ground-based and space-based optical spectroscopy, radio VLBI measurements of luminous water vapor masers, and variability monitoring studies of active galactic nuclei. I will also discuss recent X-ray observations that indicat...

Revisiting the Black Hole Masses of Soft X-ray-selected Active Galactic Nuclei

In our previous work, using luminosity and the Hβ FWHM as surrogates for black hole mass (MBH), we compared the black hole masses of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) and broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (BLS1s) in a sample of soft X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei. We found that the distributions of black hole masses in the two populations are statistically different. Recent work shows t...
